Internships
Doing an internship allows you to apply and build upon what you’ve learned in your English major in a professional environment. An internship may also turn into a full-time job!
Does an internship count toward my English degree?
English students can do a paid or unpaid internship and earn three units of English elective credit after logging 120 hours at their internship site.
Do I have to do my internship during a particular semester?
No, internships do not have to correspond to the academic calendar. You can start your internship mid-semester or during the summer and still earn three units of credit once you have met the 120-hours requirement.
What should I do to secure an internship?
Here is a short list of organizations with which English students have interned in the past few years:
- The Writer’s Workout
- Catholic Charities
- Another Life Foundation
- SpaceTogether
- Holy Apostles
- The Gazette
- Cool Science
- Succeeding Small
- United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee
On the Internship Agreement (linked below), you will need to explain how your internship will provide you with applied experience that is connected to a professional field that you may want to pursue. The internship agreement must outline specific learning outcomes that you will achieve over the course of your internship.
What do I do once I’ve secured my internship?
- With your internship supervisor, fill out and sign the Internship Agreement Form (PDF) and email the completed form to the faculty member with whom you are working.
- Register for the independent study through which you will earn your three units of English elective credit. The faculty member will tell you how to do this once they has received your Internship Agreement form.
- Complete the assignments required for the course. These include five journal entries over the course of the semester: Journal Prompt (PDF); a supervisor’s evaluation as well as tabulation and confirmation of hours interned; and, a final 2-3 page reflection about the internship experience.
If you have any questions or concerns, or simply want to brainstorm your internship options, please contact the department chair to set up an appointment.
