First-Year Rhetoric & Writing: Placement Information

Information about which course you need to take and why.

All undergraduate students must complete the Compass Curriculum core writing requirements for graduation.

First Core Writing Requirement

UCCS students choose among three options for their first writing course. Any of the options will fulfill the first core writing requirement for your degree:

  • ENGL 1310
     
  • ENGL 1308
     
  • ENGL 1300 + 1305

The courses offer differing amounts of built-in support and move at different paces. First, we encourage you to watch the following video that describes your course options:

Second Core Writing Requirement

The second core writing course you should take depends on your major.

  • Take ENGL 1410 if your major is in the
    • College of Letters, Arts & Sciences*
    • College of Education
    • School of Public Affairs
    • Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences*
  • Take TCID 2080 if your major is in the
    • College of Business
  • Take TCID 2090 if your major is in the
    • College of Engineering & Applied Science
  • Take INOV 2100 if you are a Bachelor of Innovation student

*Most Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences and All College of Letters, Arts & Sciences students except Technical Communication and Information Design majors take ENGL 1410. Students should check their degree plan or speak to an academic advisor for more information.

To enroll in a course, a student must meet at least one of the criteria listed:

To enroll in ENGL 1410

  • Have successfully passed ENGL 1305, 1308, or 1310
  • Have an SAT Reading & Writing score of 700 or above
  • Have an ACT English score of 29 or above
  • Have earned equivalent 1310 credit through:
    • Transferring in a course equivalent to ENGL 1310 with a C- or better
    • A score of 3 on the AP English Language and Composition exam or the AP English Literature and Composition exam.
    • A score of 4 or above on the IB English Literature HL exam or the English Language & Literature HL or SL exams
    • Credit for the CLEP College Composition with Modular Essay exam by scoring a 50 or above on the multiple-choice portion, and earning a “pass” on UCCS’s essay portion of the exam (contact FYWPlace@uccs.edu for more information)

To enroll in TCID 2080

  • Have successfully passed ENGL 1310 or earned equivalent credit or
  • Have successfully passed ENGL 1410

To enroll in TCID 2090

  • Have successfully passed ENGL 1310 or earned equivalent credit or
  • Have successfully passed ENGL 1410

To enroll in INOV 2100

  • Have successfully passed ENTP 1000
  • Have successfully passed INOV 1010
