Focus of Study
Rhetoric and writing are the study of how we influence, persuade, and argue in and through language. This discipline and art will cultivate students’ critical thinking and written and oral communication skills, thereby preparing them to be thoughtful and active participants in civic life and to excel professionally in whatever career they pursue.
Program Requirements
To earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- Complete at least 42 credit hours of ENGL coursework, depending on your chosen option. Of these, at least 18 hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher).
- Obtain a grade of C- or higher in all courses applied to the major.
- Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in all ENGL coursework.
- Note that you cannot apply more than 60 credit hours of ENGL coursework toward your bachelor's degree.
- Submit a Senior Assessment during your final semester of the senior year.

Complete three of the following courses (3 courses/9 credits). NOTE: ENGL 3020, 4860, and 4880 may be repeated with different topics.

Diversity Course |
Complete one unused course from the following list (1 course/3 credits). NOTE: ENGL 4860 may be repeated for this requirement with permission from the department chair.

Rhetoric and Writing Summit Course |
Complete one unused course from the following list (1 course/3 credits). NOTE: ENGL 4880 may be repeated for this requirement with a different topic.

English Electives |
Complete an additional 15 credit hours of English electives to fulfill total and upper-division (3000+ level) requirements for the major. |
Senior Assessment-Secondary Education |
Complete the Senior Assessment for the Rhetoric & Writing emphasis. |
